CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, a supporter of right to work legislation, says he’s pleased by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that government workers can’t be forced to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining.
Sununu said Wednesday that in the coming days, the state will work to determine necessary first steps to ensure that New Hampshire statutes and policies are fully compliant with constitutional requirements.
The justices scrapped a 41-year-old decision that had allowed states to require that public employees pay some fees to unions that represent them, even if the workers choose not to join.
New Hampshire lawmakers last year rejected right-to-work legislation.
The National Education Association-New Hampshire said allowing some to opt out of paying will make it harder for all public employees to provide the services that everyone depends on.
