SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Pleasant Grove Police Chief Mike Smith is leading comfortably in the Republican primary for Utah County sheriff and appears poised to win the office.
Retired U.S. Marshal Jim Phelps conceded the race Tuesday evening.
The winner will replace retiring Sheriff Jim Tracy in Utah’s second largest county, since no other candidates have filed to run in the general election.
Smith has said he would create a program to retain officers and help them advance through their careers. He’s said his background would help him relate to other municipal authorities.
Phelps spent his career in Salt Lake City. He’s said he’d concentrate on gangs and other metropolitan problems.
In May, Phelps filed a complaint saying one of Smith’s police officer helped hang a sign for his campaign while in uniform. Smith condemned the officer’s behavior.
