DELPHI, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a body found in the Tippecanoe River in northern Indiana is believed to be that of a man reported missing over the weekend.

The Department of Natural Resources says conservation officers responded Sunday to reports a man was calling for help in the river in Carroll County and disappeared below the surface.

Crews searched for a man later identified as 37-year-old Michael Bane of Battle Ground. He reportedly had been planning to swim across the river to a friend’s house.

The DNR says Tuesday a boater found a body in White County, several miles (kilometers) away. The DNR says family members say tattoos on the body match those that Bane had, but the coroner is working to confirm the identity and cause of death.
