NEW YORK (AP) - A New York physician has been indicted on a manslaughter charge for recklessly causing a patient’s overdose death
The state attorney general’s office announced the 74-court indictment against 60-year-old Barry Sloan on Tuesday. He’s also charged with multiple counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance. Information on his lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
The Manhattan patient died at the age of 36 from a fentanyl overdose.
Prosecutors say Sloan held himself out as a pain management specialist in New York and New Jersey from 2011 through 2016. They say he prescribed mostly “risky and addictive drugs,” including oxycodone, over 70,000 times.
In addition, prosecutors say Sloan was the fourth highest prescriber in New York of “Subsys,” a powerful narcotic used to treat pain in late-stage cancer patients.
