BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) - A Washington state medical board has charged a pain doctor with unprofessional conduct, alleging he violated the standard of care in treating patients with opioids at two clinics.

The Kitsap Sun reports the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery charged Beno Kuharich earlier this month, saying his treatment of eight patients represented an “extreme departure from the standard of care in chronic pain management and the practice of medicine.”

Kuharich practiced at Seattle Pain Centers before leaving in 2015 to join The Doctors Clinic in Silverdale.

Kuharich has denied the charges, saying his patients underwent “rigorous” risk assessments before treatment and were screened for drug abuse at each follow up visit. Kuharich claims the medical records for his patients contradict the board’s allegations.

A hearing is scheduled for late August.
