Rep. Maxine Waters defended herself against President Trump’s criticism Monday night, arguing that Mr. Trump has incited more violence than anyone.
“I didn’t call for harm on anybody. The President lied again,” she said on MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes.”
Ms. Waters explained that she believed in peaceful protest, which she said is the “centerpiece” of our democracy.
The California congresswoman brought the conversation to the children separated from their families by the president’s zero-tolerance policy, before arguing that Mr. Trump issued more violent statements than anyone.
She read a list of quotes from the president’s 2016 campaign rallies, including “Yeah, get him out, try not to hurt him. If you do, I’ll defend you in court, don’t worry about it.” Mr. Trump said this during a campaign rally as protesters were removed.
Ms. Waters also stood by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who denounced her earlier on Monday. She said Mrs. Pelosi was “very responsible” in her response but did not “attack” her as she called for civility.
