President Trump on Monday questioned why the Justice Department and FBI have not given Congress all the documents related to an FBI informant contacting members of his campaign in 2016.
The president’s tweet comes as a member of the House Intelligence Committee sets a 5 p.m. Monday deadline for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to turn all over all documents related to the use of an informant to spy on the Trump campaign.
“I have tried to stay uninvolved with the Department of Justice and FBI (although I do not legally have to), because of the now totally discredited and very expensive Witch Hunt currently going on. But you do have to ask why the DOJ & FBI aren’t giving over requested documents?” Mr. Trump Tweeted Monday.
The Justice Department last week gave Republican lawmakers thousands of documents related to a confidential informant’s interactions with Trump campaign aides. But Rep. Mark Meadows, North Carolina Republican, said the department didn’t go far enough.
Mr. Meadows said on Twitter Saturday that the Justice Department only provided a “small percentage,” of what lawmakers had sought.
“New reports of DOJ/FBI compliance with document requests are NOT accurate. While they have turned over additional documents, the new documents represent a small percentage of what they owe,” Mr. Meadows tweeted.
“The notion that DOJ/FBI have been forthcoming with Congress is false,” he continued.
Republicans had sought millions of documents, but the Justice Department only turned over thousands of pages.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, California Republican, also weighed on the Justice Department Monday, demanding Mr. Rosenstein answer lawmakers’ questions.
Appearing on Fox & Friends Monday, Mr. Nunes said the FBI was “swampy” for waiting “until the stroke of midnight” to send him a classified letter. The letter referred Mr. Nunes to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats for some of the documents he had requested.
“Are you running spies into Senate campaigns, House members campaigns?” Nunes said on Fox News. “This needs to be cleared up. The DOJ and FBI are on a very slippery slope.”
Mr. Nunes told the network he would meet with Mr. Coats on Monday.
