KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) - Shoshone, Idaho-based Big Wood Canal Co. has bought the hydroelectric facility at Magic Dam and has applied to transfer the facility’s license.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports Magic Reservoir Hydroelectric Inc., a subsidiary of the J.R. Simplot Co., had owned the facility.

The Big Wood Canal Co. has controlled distribution of waters impounded by the dam and stored in Magic Reservoir since it began delivering water for irrigation in 1910.

The companies filed their application May 10 with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to transfer the hydroelectric facility’s license.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has opened a public comment period on the proposed transfer, which closes July 6.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff member Patricia Gillis says the commission should approve the license transfer if no one protests.
