SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah officials have agreed to pay $450,000 to the widow of a man beaten and stabbed to death at the state prison.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports state prison officials earlier this month settled the lawsuit that claimed 24-year-old Jeffrey Vigil was killed in 2016 after guards ignored warnings that he would be in danger from members of a rival gang if he was moved to another part of the prison.

Chelsie Vigil filed the federal lawsuit claiming the Utah Department of Corrections violated her husband’s constitutional rights.

Prison officials had initially declined to give the settlement terms, but the Utah attorney general’s office released a document Thursday in response to the newspaper’s public records request.

Settlement documents show that state officials did not admit liability or wrongdoing.
