PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency says the state will be in good hands if he leaves to take a top post at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Peter Gaynor has been nominated by the White House to be deputy administrator of FEMA. He has led the state Emergency Management Agency since January 2015.
Gaynor tells WPRI-TV that the state is prepared to face any challenge that comes its way, and the agency is as strong as it has ever been.
Should Gaynor take the federal job, Deputy Director Marc Pappas would be named acting director.
Gaynor still needs to be approved by the Senate. He would report directly to FEMA Administrator Brock Long.
