BOSTON (AP) - Authorities say a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority repairman stole more than $80,000 over several months from fare collection boxes he was in charge of fixing.

Attorney General Maura Healey’s office says 55-year-old Stephen Fagerberg of Dedham was arrested Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty to larceny over $1,200 in a continuous scheme and was released after he agreed to hand over his passport and stay away from MBTA property.

Officials say authorities investigating Fagerberg planted marked bills in fare collection boxes he serviced. They say Fagerberg later went to a drive-up ATM and deposited those into his personal bank account.

The MBTA says Fagerberg has been suspended without pay.

Fagerberg’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
