PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo says families that were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border should be reunited immediately.
The Democratic governor issued a statement Wednesday after President Donald Trump signed an executive order, ending the process of separating children from families after they are detained crossing the U.S. border illegally.
Raimondo says ending the policy isn’t enough. She says children who have been shipped off to other states need to be returned to their parents.
Earlier Wednesday, Raimondo said the state would not place any children in foster care that have been separated from their parents at the border. She said the only acceptable place for them is with their parents.
The federal government had not asked Rhode Island to host any of the children.
