ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - Public land managers in southwestern Utah are imposing new fire restrictions due to high temperatures and drought conditions adding up to a potential for dangerous wildfires.
Nick Howell with the federal Bureau of Land Management’s Color Country District says projections indicate that June is probably going to be the most critical month for drought and for a lack of precipitation.
The Spectrum reports that local governments also are limiting campfires, prohibiting weed burning and restricting fireworks.
St. George has implemented new fireworks restrictions for most parts of the city, with smaller municipalities in the area following suit.
Fire officials in Washington County suspended debris burning in unincorporated areas in mid-May, two weeks earlier than usual, and the rest of the state joined the “Closed Fire Season” designation on Friday.
