WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts police department plans to build a new training facility for its officers, K-9s and a SWAT team with donations made to a nonprofit foundation following the death of a beloved sergeant.

The Cape Cod Times reports the Yarmouth Police Department will upgrade the training room in the Yarmouth Police Headquarters that will house a use-of-force simulator. The tool is designed to teach officers how to react in violent situations. There are also plans to expand the area behind the police station, and potentially to build a “shoot house’ to allow officers to practice clearing and searching rooms.

The Yarmouth Police Foundation received an influx of funds following the death of Sgt. Sean Gannon in April when he and his K-9 partner Nero were searching a house to serve an arrest warrant.
