PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island religious leaders are calling for an end to the forced separation of migrant children and parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Providence Journal reports that hundreds of children have been separated from their families since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new “zero-tolerance” policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution. President Donald Trump blamed the Democrats for the policy Monday.

The Rev. Thomas Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, said in a statement that the policy was “cruel and unnecessary.”

Sessions recently cited the Bible to justify the practice.

Rhode Island State Council of Churches governing board secretary Randy Yorston says Sessions used the biblical passage out of context. Yorston says the Bible calls on followers to welcome refugees.
