Vermont House to vote on whether to override vetoed budget

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House will vote on whether to override Republic Gov. Phil Scott’s veto of the second budget bill.

Scott vetoed the bill late Thursday. The budget bill now moves back to the House, where Speaker Mitzi Johnson said an override vote will be held Tuesday.

The Democratic majority would need to peel off Republican members to reach the two-thirds majority to override the veto. If the override vote fails the House would need to craft a new budget bill, which would also require Republican support if they want to suspend the rules to pass the budget by the July 1 deadline.

The first budget bill received support from Vermont three major parties, but since the veto Republicans have stood behind Scott’s proposal.
