COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped slightly last month as about 1,800 new jobs were created and a small number of people stopped looking for work.
The Department of Employment and Workforce said in a news release Friday that unemployment in South Carolina fell to 4 percent in May. That’s down from 4.2 percent in April and 4.4 percent in March.
The national unemployment rate in May was 3.8 percent.
The state agency says South Carolina added 2,100 jobs in May in trade transportation and utilities, but lost 1,000 jobs in leisure and hospitality.
Fairfield County continued to have the highest unemployment rate at 5.2 percent. Charleston County had the lowest rate at 2.3 percent.
