JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Thousands of people who have not been charged for water in Mississippi’s capital city are now starting to receive bills.
The Clarion Ledger reports that just over 20,000 customers were not billed for several months because of problems with the city’s billing system. That is almost one-third of the 57,000 customers.
Public Works Director Robert Miller said in a recent memo to Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba that his department has resolved 3,865 customer bills. Miller says billing should be in place for 99 percent of all customers by Oct. 1. That is the first day of the city’s budget year.
Miller says the city has lost between $10 million and $20 million since this past Oct. 1 because of billing problems.
