SILVER SPRINGS, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a Maryland police officer fatally shot a man after the two had a brief physical confrontation.
Montgomery Police Chief J. Thomas Manger tells news outlets the man began to fight with an officer who tried to speak with him Monday. Manger says it’s unclear why the officer approached the man, who police don’t believe was armed. He says the officer shot the man multiple times and later gave him first aid.
The police chief says the man was black. He did not release his identity, or the identity or race of the officer.
Manger says several witnesses saw the shooting. He says an investigation is ongoing and body camera footage is being reviewed. He says the results of the investigation will be submitted to the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office.
