Rep. Pramila Jayapal said Monday that immigrant parents were given the wrong list of children by the Trump administration.
Ms. Jayapal, Washington Democrat, visited more than 170 women who were arrested and separated from their children at the border earlier in June. The congresswoman revisited the center June 23 to speak with men at the facility.
She said officials at the federal prison gave a list to the parents with their information and the names of children. However, these parents told Ms. Jayapal that the names were incorrect.
“From the beginning, I’ve had deep concerns that the Trump administration does not know which parents go with which children,” Ms. Jayapal said during an interview on CNN’s “Newsroom.”
She explained that the Department of Health and Human Services still has not responded to questions regarding how many children are not matched with their families.
Ms. Jayapal estimated that at least 19 children younger than 5 were not matched, but “there may be more.”
The congresswoman has been a vocal opponent against the separation policy. She was among those arrested at the June 28 “Women Disobey” protest and has repeatedly called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be abolished.
