SEATTLE (AP) - Dozens of volunteers kayaked into Seattle’s Lake Union to pick up firework debris and other trash following the Independence Day festivities.
The Seattle Times reports the environmental group Puget Soundkeeper organized the Thursday morning cleanup with half the volunteer force on the water and the other half cleaning the shore.
The group collected 552 pounds (250 kilograms) of trash, which consisted of beer bottles, food wrappers, and bits of cardboard and plastic packaging from fireworks.
Puget Soundkeeper Executive Director Chris Wilke says the group also found an unexploded mortar about the size of a soccer ball, resulting in a visit from the Seattle police bomb squad.
Wilke says more trash was collected Thursday than in previous years.
