President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort applied to hire 61 additional foreign workers, according to documents released by the government this week.
On Tuesday, a request was filed to fill server and cook positions in the restaurant. They would begin work in October and continue through May 2019. The application outlines that servers brought on board will be paid at least $12.68 an hour, with possible overtime and raises. Cooks will be slightly more at $13.31 an hour.
The Everglades Club, another elite spot next to Mar-a-Lago, also filed to hire foreign workers. According to government documents, the club sought to hire at least 20 workers for the same season as Mar-a-Lago’s request.
In November 2017, the luxury club hired 70 foreign employees for the holiday season, which is something Mar-a-Lago has done in several years.
The president is criticized for hiring foreign workers despite his emphasis on hiring Americans for U.S.-based jobs.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump defended the seasonal hires as necessary for business.
“Everybody agrees with me on that. They were part-time jobs. Otherwise, we might as well have just closed the doors,” he said during a Republican debate in February 2016.
