MILWAUKEE (AP) - Milwaukee officials approved an ordinance giving the city authority to impound electric scooters that residents have been renting from a California-based company since last month.
City officials say state law makes the scooters illegal. But the Milwaukee Common Council did not ban the scooters with the ordinance given approval Tuesday. Instead, the Journal Sentinel reports the measure would allow the city to impound scooters when they’re parked on sidewalks and Bird Rides Inc. would need to pay $100 to recover them. Riders would not be fined.
Mayor Tom Barrett still needs to approve the proposal.
Electric scooters have proliferated nationwide in recent months and cities are grappling with how to deal with them. Milwaukee has a pending lawsuit asking a judge to order Bird to stop renting scooters.
