Caroline Wozniacki has withdrawn from the Citi Open, this week’s joint ATP and WTA Tour stop in the District, with a right leg injury.
Wozniacki, who hails from Denmark, is the No. 2-ranked women’s singles player in the world. She finally broke through with her first Grand Slam title at the 2018 Australian Open.
The injury may have happened as recently as Tuesday, because Wozniacki seemed primed to play in this week’s event. She asked for District restaurant recommendations on Twitter Monday night, and a tennis.com story on her published Tuesday described why she chose to come to Washington instead of another WTA event.
“It’s a great city. Yesterday, we walked around in the city a little bit,” Wozniacki told tennis.com. “It’s more of a European city — you can walk places, there’s a lot of people outside, a lot of good restaurants and things like that. There’s a lot of green areas around which I think is really awesome.”
Belgian player Ysaline Bonaventure, who lost in the final round of weekend qualifying 6-4, 7-5 to American Allie Kiick, was dubbed the “lucky loser” who will take Wozniacki’s place in the main draw. Tournament officials released a revised draw, available on citiopentennis.com/draws.
