AURORA, Colo. (AP) - The Latest on two shootings involving police in suburban Denver (all times local):

5:30 p.m.

Investigators say a police officer shot and killed a man who opened fire on someone who had broken into his home in suburban Denver.

The Aurora Sentinel reports police received multiple calls about a break-in at the home early Monday morning, and when officers arrived, they heard gunshots inside.

Police, who described the scene as chaotic and violent, say they encountered an armed man and fatally shot him. That man turned out to be the person who lived in the home. A second man, the suspected intruder, was found dead during a search. A child in the home also suffered serious injuries at the hands of the intruder, but police have not released any other details.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz called the circumstances “heartbreaking and tragic” for everyone involved.

Investigators have not released the names of the resident or the suspected intruder.

Police in Aurora were involved in two fatal shootings over the weekend.

Officers shot a man who drove a vehicle toward them on Saturday night, hitting several of their vehicles.

Another man was shot early Monday by officers responding to a reported break-in at a house. A second man was found dead inside the house east of Denver.

The officers involved have been placed on leave while the cases are being investigated.

The names of the shooting victims have not been released.
