President Trump would be acting within his authority — and would be justified — in revoking the security clearances of James Clapper and the others he has identified for such action (“Trump threatens to revoke Obama officials’ security clearances.” Web, July 23). By their acts these individuals are committing treason — that very thing of which, ironically, they accuse the president.

It is one thing to disagree with the actions and approach to duties of the president. It is quite another to describe his conduct as criminal and suggest that he be removed based on nothing more than personal antipathy. These officials’ behavior is not only disrespectful of the president, but also of the presidency itself, and as it reflects negatively upon our country, it also threatens national security.

These people have blurred the line between their roles as media commentators and Democratic Party talking heads. Any comments they make regarding the president are tainted by their roles in the baseless Trump-Russia collusion story. Given that future investigations may fully disclose additional ethical lapses and/or criminal acts on their parts, their disdain is palpable and bias dangerously obvious.

The claims that Mr. Trump is moving to revoke the security clearances in an attempt to censor their comments are totally without merit. The removal of their security clearance will not prevent them from continuing their diatribes should they choose to do so. But it will justifiably strip away the unwarranted auras of authenticity, authority, respectability and credibility from the “opinions” they offer for public consumption. That is as it should be.
