RICHMOND — Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Friday there is a chance Stacy McGee could miss the start of the season with the defensive lineman recovering from core muscle surgery.

McGee was placed on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform list to start camp. He missed most of OTAs after suffering a groin injury, which required surgery.

“We’ll wait and see,” Gruden said. “He’s doing a great job of working to get back into shape. A big body like that, it might take a little bit more time. But I can’t say because Stacy has had a couple of injuries in the past and has done a great job of rehabbing.

“He looks in good spirits and good shape already. But that’s a ’time will tell’ type thing.”

McGee joined the Redskins in 2017 on a five-year, $25 million deal. He was a rotating piece on the team’s defensive line, playing 39.4 percent of the defensive snaps. McGee finished with 44 tackles.

Cornerback Josh Holsey, meanwhile, has no timetable to return after he suffered a foot injury before camp. The 2017 seventh-rounder is also on the PUP list. Holsey suffered the injury after a table fell on his foot.

Gruden said Holsey is a walking boot at the moment.

“We don’t know (the timetable),” Gruden said. “He severed his big toe.”
