“Star Wars” fans will get one more opportunity to see Carrie Fisher’s iconic character on the big screen, but Lucasfilm and Disney will use unseen “Force Awakens” footage to make it happen.

Moviegoers around the world wondered how “Star Wars: Episode IX” would wrap up due to the unexpected death of Ms. Fisher in December 2016. The answer was provided on Friday when Mr. Abrams announced a plan that is backed by members of the late actress’ family.

“Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us,” Mr. Abrams said in a statement. “We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie [Lourd], we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia [Organa] in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Lucasfilm’s announcement also confirmed the return of actor Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

“Star Wars: Episode IX,” is scheduled to premier December 20, 2019.
