ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he would sign a bill extending usage of speed cameras near New York City schools “within 15 minutes” of the state Senate passing the measure.
But the Republican-led chamber adjourned last month without taking up the legislation, and the current law authorizing 120 cameras expires Wednesday.
City officials credit the devices with decreasing speeding violations in school zones and increasing safety for students.
The Democrat-controlled Assembly passed the legislation. Cuomo said during a Manhattan news conference Wednesday that he would sign the measure into law if the Senate would approve it.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, also supports the legislation.
So far Republicans have balked at requests to return to Albany to take up the bill, blaming Cuomo for the impasse.
