GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) - Grand Teton National Park has released the name of a man who died after falling about 300 feet (91 meters) while rappelling a popular rock climbing route.
Park officials say 33-year-old Marco Dees, of New Paltz, New York and the Netherlands, fell Sunday on the Guide’s Wall, a feature on Storm Point that looms over Jenny Lake north of Teewinot Mountain. His climbing partner, 24-year-old Grace Mooney, of Madison, Wisconsin, had to remain on the wall overnight until she could be rescued Monday morning.
Rangers learned of the accident late Sunday night when two hikers saw a flashing light and heard Mooney calling for help. Park spokeswoman Denise Germann says Dees and Mooney were capable climbers with appropriate gear.
Rangers are investigating the condition and position of the climbers’ gear.
