STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - The former head of a northeast Mississippi city’s park system has been indicted on charges that he helped pay workers for more time than they worked.
Herman Peters, who was fired from his position as Starkville’s parks director, was served with the indictment Monday from an Oktibbeha County grand jury. Local news outlets report that Peters is free on $5,000 bail. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak for him.
Peters and three former parks employees were arrested in January. Another former parks employee was arrested in December.
Peters and others are accused of embezzling $21,702 from 2015 through 2017. Peters’ role in the alleged scheme was to approve overpayments to two contractors and a department employee.
No indictments have yet been unsealed against others in the case.
