PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix city officials say they’ll be giving out fans, visors and other heat safety gear to early morning commuters as the National Weather Service forecasts excessive temperatures that could reach as high as 116 (46.67 Celsius) degrees during the first part of the week.
City spokeswoman Tammy Vo says officials will be handing out the equipment Monday morning at the CityScape development in downtown Phoenix.
Temperatures in the desert city regularly exceed 100 (37.78 Celsius) degrees in the summer months. The weather service issued an excessive heat warning effective Monday morning through Wednesday, with the hottest day likely to be Tuesday.
Heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion killed 155 people in Phoenix’s Maricopa County last year.
