ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Times has selected Mark Katches as its new executive editor.

The newspaper announced the hiring Monday. Katches is expected to start by the end of next month.

Katches has been with The Oregonian since 2014. He is currently the vice president of content and editor. The release says he also is responsible for OregonLive, a general interest website that has recorded strong audience growth since he took over.

Katches helped launch California Watch at the Center for Investigative Reporting in 2009. He later became editorial director of the center, which won a national Emmy Award, a Peabody Award and many other prizes under his leadership.

The center also collaborated with the Tampa Bay Times on an investigative project, “America’s Worst Charities.”
