The Washington Nationals traded outfielder Brian Goodwin to the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan, the team announced Sunday.

Goodwin was playing his third season for the Nationals. He was batting just .200 in 48 appearances this year, with three home runs, one double and 12 RBIs.

The 27-year-old has his best season in the majors last year when he played 74 games, hit 13 home runs and 21 doubles while batting .251. With the rise of Juan Soto and with players like Adam Eaton returning to health, Goodwin was crowded out of the outfield.

“He’s a professional,” manager Dave Martinez said of Goodwin. “It was tough because I couldn’t get him in the lineup, and for him he’s going to go to Kansas City and play, which is good. Very talented and I appreciate everything he’s done and what he’s meant.”

Condra-Bogan, 23, is a 6-foot-3 righty from South Carolina. He has split this season between two single-A affiliates in the Royals’ system, the Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Lexington Legends, where he’s combined to go 1-1 with five saves and a 40-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

It’s the second trade Washington and Kansas City have teamed up for this season. The Nationals acquired Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera in June for three prospects.

In conjunction with the move, the Nationals recalled relief pitcher Sammy Solis from triple-A Syracuse for another stint with the big-league club.

Solis’ velocity had been down, but has returned to 94 miles per hour, Martinez said. It was recommended that Solis work on getting better results against left-handed batters, which has also improved. He re-joins Washington so its bullpen could return to seven healthy pitchers.
