LONDONDERRY, Vt. (AP) - Police say a woman died while trying to save her 5-year-old grandson from drowning.

Vermont State Police say 55-year-old Julie Lawrence tried to help Jackson Lawrence as he struggled in the water Friday afternoon at a lake access area at Lowell Lake State Park. The boy was airlifted to a New Hampshire hospital and is in critical condition.

Rescuers and officers found Julie and Jackson Lawrence unresponsive in the water and tried to resuscitate both. Julie Lawrence was declared dead at the scene.

Once Jackson fell off a flotation device, Julie Lawrence and Jackson’s 9-year-old brother tried to rescue him. Police say the brother swam for help and is in good health.

The manner of Julie Lawrence’s death is under investigation. Police says it appears she struggled in the water.
