Teen-ager Juan Soto has become the brightest spot in the Washington Nationals’ lineup, and the rest of Major League Baseball has noticed.
Soto was named National League Rookie of the Month after a June in which he hit for a .317 average with six doubles and six homers in 24 games.
Soto initially was called to the big leagues out of necessity in May while Adam Eaton, Brian Goodwin, Rafael Bautista and Howie Kendrick were all sidelined with injuries. Victor Robles was considered Washington’s top prospect, but the 21-year-old is nursing an elbow injury.
Since his arrival, Soto has established himself as an everyday left fielder.
Soto slugged his way to three promotions to begin the season. The 19-year-old outfielder began the year with Class A-affiliate Hagerstown Suns before his fast track to the Nationals. At each level, he has hit above .300.
The native of Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, led National League rookies in batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.440), slugging percentage (.610), OPS (1.050), home runs (6) and walks (18) in June.
Soto reached base safely in 22 of the 24 games he played during his first full month in the majors.
Soto hit multiple home runs June 13 against the New York Yankees and June 29 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
