Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday continued to defend President Trump from one of his top critics, blasting former CIA Director John Brennan as “the most biased, bigoted, over the top, hyperbolic, sort of unhinged.”
During an interview on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” Mr. Paul said it “really is an insult to everything about our government to call the president treasonous because he doesn’t like him.”
Monday, Mr. Brennan the president’s comments at a joint press conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin as “nothing short of treasonous.”
The next day, he doubled down on his criticism, warning that Mr. Trump put the intelligence community at risk, which may result in vital intelligence being withheld from the president.
The Kentucky senator recounted attempting to block Mr. Brennan’s confirmation with a filibuster, emphasizing his disdain for the former head spy.
He accused Mr. Brennan and former National Intelligence Director James Clapper of wanting to expand the authority of intelligence agencies to “grab up everyone’s information, including Americans.”
“So I don’t really have a lot of respect for these people, even before they decided to go on hating the president,” he said, “I dislike these people because they wanted to grab up so much power and use it against the American people.”
