BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is criticizing President Donald Trump’s defense of Russian President Vladimir Putin and continued doubt over Russian election meddling.
Heitkamp issued a statement late Monday after Trump and Putin spoke at a joint news conference in Finland where Trump appeared to cast doubt on U.S. intelligence findings that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.
Heitkamp says “an American president stood with Russia over our own country.”
Heitkamp, a Democrat, is facing Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.
Cramer says he believes Russia “interfered” with the election. But he didn’t criticize Trump’s remarks directly and says there’s no evidence that the Trump presidential campaign colluded with Russia.
