Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed Democratic colleague Rep. Nancy Pelosi Monday, suggesting the Kremlin has damaging information against President Trump forcing him to put Russian interests over the United States’.
Mr. Trump dismissed an opportunity during the press conference in Helsinki to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin about the allegation of Russia interfering with the U.S. 2016 election, calling the special counsel’s investigation a “disaster for our country.”
“In the entire history of our country, Americans have never seen a president of the United States support an American adversary the way @realDonaldTrump has supported President Putin,” Mr. Schumer said in a series of tweets responding to the president’s comments.
“For the president of the United States to side with President Putin against American law enforcement, American defense officials, and American intelligence agencies is thoughtless, dangerous, and weak,” the New York Democrat added. “The president is putting himself over our country.”
Mr. Schumer also said the president’s trip to NATO during the past week has weakened America’s allies, but strengthened U.S. adversaries.
“Millions of Americans will continue to wonder if the only possible explanation for this dangerous behavior is the possibility that President Putin holds damaging information over President Trump,” Mr. Schumer said.
