Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer will be the National League’s starting pitcher for the 2018 All-Star Game at Nationals Park on Tuesday.
NL manager Dave Roberts announced Scherzer would start at Roberts’ press conference Monday.
Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, will play in his seventh consecutive All-Star Game and start his second straight. He struck out two batters in one inning of work last year in Miami.
At 12-5, Scherzer is tied for the most wins by a pitcher in the NL, and his 2.41 ERA ranks third in the league. His 182 strikeouts also leads the NL, 33 ahead of the next-closest pitcher.
Scherzer, who was also named an “All-Star Ambassador” for the week’s festivities in his team’s hometown, was picked over other NL options Jacob deGrom and Aaron Nola.
The 89th MLB All-Star Game will be played Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Washington. It will be nationally broadcast on FOX.
“When Dave told me that he was gonna give me the nod, so many emotions when you know you’re pitching in your home park,” Scherzer said.
