VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi police department is buying a drone to keep an eye on the city.
The Vicksburg mayor and alderman have accepted a Federal Aviation Administration certificate allowing the police department to conduct aircraft operations at or below an altitude of 400 feet (122 meters).
Police Chief Milton Moore tells the Vicksburg Post that the department expects to buy the drone before the budget year ends Sept. 30.
He says police will be able to use the drone to help with crowd control at festivals, to look at suspicious people or vehicles or to make sure areas are safe before sending in officers.
The chief and four other Vicksburg officers have had drone training.
