President Trump had his first meeting Friday Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, joining the monarch for tea at historic Windsor Castle outside London with first lady Melania Trump and Prince Philip, the queen’s husband.
The 92-year-old queen stood alone at attention for about 15 minutes outside the castle waiting for the president and first lady, who arrived by helicopter and then pulled up to the royal residence in a Range Rover. After the playing of the British and U.S. national anthems, they walked around a quadrangle to inspect the royal guard.
They then went inside the castle for a private tea.
The dignified welcoming ceremony contrasted with central London, where throngs of protesters demonstrated against Mr. Trump’s first visit. Thousands of marchers organized by left-wing groups protested Mr. Trump personally and expressed anger at the British government for giving him a warm welcome.
A giant orange balloon of Mr. Trump, depicting him as a pouting baby in a diaper and carrying a smartphone, was raised aloft in Parliament Square in London for several hours.
There were also pro-Trump marchers in the city.
