House candidate Katie Arrington of South Carolina described the deadly car accident that she was in as “horrific” on Thursday, days before she plans on returning to the campaign trail.
During an interview on Fox New’s “Fox & Friends,” Ms. Arrington told of the moments leading up to the June 23 crash near Charleston. She recalled texting her husband about getting food and saying “I love you” just before being hit.
“And the next thing I knew, we saw a pair of headlights,” she said, “I yelled to Jackie to swerve.”
Ms. Arrington gave “the bulk of the credit” to Ms. Goff for saving her life that night.
“We just managed to go off of center, so we both lived,” she said, “It was horrific.”
She also thanked all the first responders and said she “never stopped talking” to God throughout the ordeal. Ms. Arrington explained that she never lost consciousness throughout the incident, “which was insane.”
“If you don’t understand that was God’s good embrace holding me and Jackie, you need to believe,” Ms. Arrington, a Catholic, said.
Ms. Goff and Ms. Arrington were hit head-on by Helen White, who was driving drunk at the time. She died at the scene.
Ms. Arrington asked for prayers and good thoughts for Ms. White’s family.
“Please Uber, Lyft — don’t let anyone drinking get behind the wheel of a car,” the candidate said.
After the accident, Ms. Arrington underwent multiple surgeries for her injuries, including spinal cord impingement and instability.
The South Carolina Republican beat out incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford for the GOP primary in June.
Fox News said Ms. Arrington will return to working on her campaign soon.
