Rep. Matt Gaetz defended fellow Congressman Jim Jordan and said the “deep state” is targeting the Ohio Republican.
“I think there people that have some ’loose affiliation with the deep state that are out to get Jim Jordan,” Mr. Gaetz, Florida Republican, said Wednesday night during an interview on Fox News’ “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”
Mr. Jordan has recently been accused of not acting on allegations of abuse at Ohio State University while he was an assistant wrestling coach.
Several former wrestlers have claimed they spoke to Mr. Jordan about the issue during his time at the university, but the congressman denies knowing about the abuse.
Mr. Gaetz explained that he believes Mr. Jordan is targeted because of how he has pushed witnesses from the Department of Justice and FBI during congressional hearings.
“Jim Jordan is a man of integrity and these attacks against him are a direct consequence of the outstanding oversight work Jim Jordan is doing,” he said.
Mr. Gaetz said he is “confident to my core” of the congressman’s innocence, pointing out that it’s impossible to prove Mr. Jordan did not know information.
This is not the first time Mr. Gaetz has accused the deep state to be at work. In June he accused House Speaker Paul Ryan of defending the deep state after the top Republican did not support President Trump’s claims of being spied on.
