Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said Thursday lawmakers should be focused on Russian election interference rather than grilling FBI agent Peter Strzok.
“This country has a number of emergencies that we are not spending any time on,” he said in opening remarks ahead of Mr. Strzok’s testimony.
The House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees are questioning Mr. Strzok about his roles in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe and the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email.
“In the majority’s view we do not have to conduct oversight on almost any national security issue — but we have hours on end to discuss Mr. Strzok’s extramarital affair,” Mr. Nadler said.
Mr. Strzok had an affair with former FBI lawyer Lisa Page. During the relationship, the two exchanged text messages blasting President Trump as “loathsome” and “an idiot.”
On Wednesday, Mr. Nadler demanded Republicans release the full, unredacted transcript of Mr. Strzok’s closed-door testimony before Congress. He claims during the private hearing, Republicans were focused on undermining the Mueller probe rather asking about Russian election interference.
