House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said he hasn’t driven in several years and when he went to check if his car still worked, he discovered a family of woodchucks had eaten all the wiring.
Mr. Ryan, as speaker, has a security detail that drives him. He said Thursday that when he got the security in 2015 he parked his Chevrolet Suburban at his mother’s house in Wisconsin. She would start it every month, but when she went to Florida for the winter then returned, she tried to start it and it didn’t work.
He took it to the mechanic who found the woodchucks.
“My car was eaten by animals,” he said in an appearance at the Economic Club of Washington.
Mr. Ryan is retiring at the end of this year and will need to start driving himself again.
He said he recently renewed his license to make sure he’s ready. And he said he’ll buy an F-150 pickup truck.
