OPINION:
Citing his concern about Judge Kavanaugh’s adherence to judicial precedent, Sen. Chuck Schumer has announced he will take the unprecedented step of questioning Judge Kavanaugh about his personal opinions on cases that may come before him on the court of appeals on which he currently serves and on the Supreme Court to which he has been nominated (“Chuck Schumer: Brett Kavanaugh must divulge personal views on abortion to win confirmation,” Web, July 9).
Is the right word to describe Mr. Schumer’s intentions oxymoronic or hypocritical — or both? Although he graduated from Harvard Law School, Mr. Schumer seems to think a judicial confirmation is like a congressional election. To him the independent judiciary is just another branch of Congress.
One hopes Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, will maintain order in the committee hearings and not allow committee members to ask questions which would force Judge Kavanaugh to breach the code of judicial ethics in order to respond.
