Sen. Ted Cruz is playing catch up on the fundraising front in his re-election race against Democrat Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

The Cruz campaign announced Thursday the conservative lawmaker had raked in close to $4.6 million in the second quarter of 2018 — less than half of Mr. O’Rourke’s haul.

Mr. Cruz is viewed as a favorite to win re-election, but Mr. O’Rourke is amassing a powerful war chest.

Mr. O’Rourke announced on Facebook this week he had raised $10.4 million over the past three months, leaving him with $14 million in the bank, according to the Texas Tribune.

The Cruz campaign announced Thursday that he has $10 million cash on hand and said voters are starting to realize Mr. O’Rourke is wrong on immigration and guns.

“In contrast, Sen. Cruz has spent the last six years successfully fighting for the issues that matter to Texans: promoting jobs, cutting taxes, reducing regulations, securing the border, expanding school choice and defending the Constitution,” said Emily Miller, a campaign spokesperson.
