The Washington Redskins used a sixth-round pick to draft Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander in Wednesday’s supplemental draft.

Alexander, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, recorded seven interceptions and 125 tackles in three years at Tech. But the 21-year-old was ruled academically ineligible for the 2018 season, so he declared for the NFL’s supplemental draft instead.

The Redskins will now lose their sixth-round pick in 2019.

Washington has a recent history with defensive backs from Virginia Tech. The Redskins initially drafted cornerback Kendall Fuller in 2016 and selected Greg Stroman in the seventh-round this year.

Torrian Gray, the Redskins defensive backs coach, also coached with the Hokies from 2006-2015. He joined the Redskins in 2017.

Alexander was one of two players picked in this year’s supplemental draft.

In a corresponding move, the Redskins waived punter Sam Irwin-Hill.
