WATERLOO, N.Y. (AP) - A man and woman were fatally shot and another woman was wounded in an attack by a man later captured at a nearby upstate New York campground, authorities said Wednesday.
State police said the shooting took place about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in Waterloo, a Finger Lakes village in Seneca County about midway between Syracuse and Rochester.
The wounded woman was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a Rochester hospital, police said. The victims’ names hadn’t been released as of Wednesday afternoon.
Police advised residents to remain indoors Wednesday morning as they searched for the suspect. Troopers said he was captured about 7:45 a.m. at the nearby Cheerful Valley Campground in Phelps in neighboring Ontario County. Local media reported the suspect was airlifted to a Rochester hospital for treatment of injuries that apparently were self-inflicted.
Authorities haven’t released the suspect’s name.
Waterloo Police Chief Jason Godley said a taxi cab dropped off the two women at a home late Tuesday night after a night out. They were attacked moments later, Godley said. State police said the male victim was already at the location where the women were dropped off when he was attacked.
More information is expected to be released Wednesday afternoon at a news conference at the state police barracks in Waterloo.
Waterloo, a village of about 5,000 residents, was officially recognized by Congress in 1966 as creating Memorial Day a century earlier.
